Title: Enhancing education for sustainable development during adolescence Studies show that people experience a dip in interest and concern about environmental problems during their adolescent years (age 13-17). However, there is a lack of information on whether this dip applies to the other two dimensions of Sustainable Development (SD) i.e. social and economic, as well. This study examined changes in the broader concept of Sustainability Consciousness (SC) throughout adolescence. SC is defined as â€Å"a composite of knowingness, attitudes, and self-reported behavior related to each of the three dimensions (environmental, social, and economic) of SD.† Using an age-adapted questionnaire, the investigators surveyed more than 2,400 students†¦show more content†¦To account for potential differences in comprehensibility, they created three age-adapted (but compatible) versions of the same questionnaire. The teachers distributed the forms to all participants; for grades 6 and 9 the forms were handed to parents to respect national regulations. S tudents submitted their responses using a web-based software (SurveyReport), with the assistance of a researcher. The online method minimized missing responses and allowed direct transfer of data to the statistical software used for analysis by researchers (SPSS 20). Investigators used multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA and Wilkis’ lambda statistics) to identify differences in SC across grade levels. Univariate analysis (ANOVA) was later used to provide more clarity on found differences, and describe results at a smaller scale. Analyses showed that students’ SC dips as they enter and go through adolescence, but the dip subsides when they transition to adulthood (age 18-19). Indeed, mean SC values were found to be significantly lower in all three SD dimensions (social, economic, economic) for adolescent students compared to the respective mean values for sixth and twelve graders.
